Description:
“O my God and Creator… do Thou Thyself teach me to speak what I ought, both for myself and for the people here present, unto salvation of soul.”

This prayer, drawn from the writings of the twelfth-century Greek saint Symeon the New Theologian, was used by the Russian village priest Fr. Ilarion as he preached faithfully for more than forty years, from 1966 until his repose in 2008.

This spiritually rich volume presents a carefully selected collection of Fr. Ilarion’s sermons, delivered on Sundays, feast days, and other occasions throughout the Christian year. His words are marked by clarity, simplicity, and deep pastoral wisdom, speaking powerfully to the heart of every Christian reader.

A central theme running through these sermons is hope, always grounded in the essential call to repentance. Fr. Ilarion teaches that repentance is the beginning of the Christian life and the first step on the path toward Christ. Without repentance, he reminds us, Christianity is impossible and unthinkable. Through repentance, the soul turns away from sin and slavery and toward virtue, freedom, and the light of Christ.

This book is an ideal companion to Champion of Good: The Life of Father Ilarion. Those already familiar with Fr. Ilarion’s life will be deeply moved by his preaching, while readers encountering him for the first time through these sermons will be inspired to learn more about his life and witness.

Together, his life and words reveal the great spiritual possibilities open to every soul that turns to God with humility, sincerity, and singleness of mind.

The sermons are arranged by subject for easy reading and reflection. Additional indexes list the sermons according to the church calendar and in chronological order, allowing readers to follow them both liturgically and historically.

A profound and uplifting collection for anyone interested in Orthodox preaching, repentance, spiritual renewal, Russian Orthodox tradition, and the pastoral wisdom of Father Ilarion.
